Balancing Yin and Yang

12.04.2022

This week’s bulletin is written by my lovely assistant, Sophie. Sophie began working for me in July 2021, and day by day, week by week, she’s fallen deeper and deeper in love with the Young Living oils. When I asked her recently about how she felt about the oils, she said, ”I can’t imagine life without them!” I definitely know how that feels!

About 3 months ago, Sophie wrote one of our weekly oils bulletins. called The Healing Power of Savasana. In it, she shared her wisdom about how essential oils can be incorporated into the yogic practice called Savasana (pronounced “shavasana”). This is also known as “Corpse Pose”. We received such wonderful feedback to her bulletin that I have asked her if she would share some more of her wisdom on the uses of essential oils for spiritual awareness and to accompany our meditation and yoga practices.

She’s chosen the topic, and I’m sure you will LOVE it! Enjoy!

Balancing Yin and Yang

You’ve probably seen the yin/yang symbol at some point during your life, but do you know what it means…?

The concept of yin and yang originates from Chinese Tao philosophy, based on the idea that opposite energies complement each other to create wholeness and balance.

Chinese philosophy says that we need both aspects to be balanced in order to live a healthy life, and so it is useful to explore how we can ensure our yin and yang energies stay in harmony.
When we aren’t balanced, we might have a deficiency or excess of either yin or yang energy, and this idea is often seen in principles of Chinese medicine.  For example, if we have an excess of yang, we may get a fever, and if we have an excess of yin we may develop water retention. Knowing more about yin and yang energy can therefore help us to keep our wellbeing in balance.

Yin and Yang: the different energies

The whole of life can be described in terms of its yin and yang aspects. There is never one without the other. Here are some examples of yin and yang energies in life:

The important thing to remember is that both yin and yang are needed to create balance – and that they are not static or in any way independent energies – they work together. However, we can experience a deficiency or excess of one or the other, and it is then that we may want to balance it out with whatever we need more of.

Balancing Yin deficiency and Yang excess

Let’s start with how to balance our yin deficiency and yang excess energy, because often this is the one we struggle most with in modern society.

With the ongoing battle between work-life balance, it can be difficult to find calm and quiet as we are constantly on the move.

We have already discussed trying yin yoga, which is a very inwards-diving space of quiet contemplation with little movement, but gentle allowing of softness. Other practices that be helpful in harmonising yin energy can include meditation, sound healing, reflection and journaling, sleep, reading, cool bathing, or having relaxing treatments like reiki (particularly in the evening).

Essential oil blends to Harmonise your Yin Energy

Did you know, there are also essential oils that you can integrate into your life to help you harmonise your energy? So, which oils can help? If you scroll down, you’ll come to a list of many different oils and oil blends from Young Living which enhance the yin energy in our life.

But first, I want to give you 3 beautiful recipes for your ‘yin’ oils – if you’re feeling imbalanced in this way, then why not give them a go?

Breathe in Yin: Diffuse a beautiful blend of 4 drops Joy, 4 drops German Chamomile, and 2 drops Vetiver. Do this in the evening before bed, which is a yin time – you might want to incorporate this with a yin practice of some kind, like yoga, meditation or reading.

Bath Balance: Take a relaxing but cooler-than-usual bath with scented salts. Mix the following into half a cup of Epsom salts, and add to the running bath – again before bed time… 4 drops Sensation, 4 drops Melissa (if you don’t have Melissa, you can substitute 3 drops Jade Lemon and 3 drops of Lemon Myrtle for a similar aroma….but Melissa is definitely the Queen of yin oils if you have her, and there really is nothing to truly compare to her aroma and effects, so she’s definitely one for your wish list of oils!).

Yin Spritz: try using a Yin Spritz throughout the day to help calm your mind. Add 15 drops of Surrender oil and 2-3 drops of Geranium Bourbon into a 60ml glass spray bottle. Mix with 1 tsp of Witch Hazel and top up with distilled water and spray to your heart’s content.

These beautiful blends can be really helpful in rebalancing the flow of yin, so give them a try – and get creative!

So what are your Yin essential oil blends?

If you love to reach for your Young Living blends, you’re in for a treat! You’ll find many that are beneficial as a support for your yin energy, but I’ve selected a few of my favourites below, and given you some suggestions for how to use them to help you feel balanced and restored:

What about single oils?

In deciding which single oils are Yin-promoting, choose ones that foster a sense of relaxation and reflection, and which help you to centre and to connect with your emotions. Good yin oils are often top notes, meaning they have very bright, noticeable aromas. But – there are some exceptions like Vetiver, which is very much a base note. Some of my favourite choices are:

Vetiver: known as ‘The Oil of Tranquillity’, Vetiver was used in traditional Chinese medicine to help balance the emotions, ease negative feelings, stimulate focus and to calm and cool the body.

Rose: Chinese Medicine names Rose a ‘powerful Yin tonic’. Rose’s ability to comfort is well-known and has been described as feeling like a mother’s warm embrace. For this reason, it is a wonderful essential oil to use for anyone who is feeling emotionally or energetically low, or who needs to experience the deeply nurturing aspect of the Divine Feminine.

Geranium: another beautiful floral oil, said in Chinese Medicine to have the power to bolster the shen (or higher consciousness) and rejuvenate vitality through improved sleep and rest.

German Chamomile: used in herbal remedies for thousands of years, German Chamomile oil has a calming aroma that helps create feelings of peace and patience.

Melissa: called ‘The Elixir of Life’ all the way back in the 15th Century, Melissa relaxes the body, mind, and Soul while bringing feelings of peace and contentment.

Ylang Ylang: ideal to use when you feel tired, drained or frustrated. Its famous sweet scent can lift your mood and promote a calming effect on the body.

I hope you’ve enjoyed our journey into yin. In next week’s bulletin, we’ll talk about how to add more yang into your balance…
