Could you welcome a little more Surrender in your life?

4.08.2022

As I take a breath after a few huge months, my beautiful assistant Sophie reached out to me and offered to write this week’s Oil Temple bulletin. You can see my smile, can’t you? It runs from ear to ear.

Sophie and I share a love of people, animals, life, spirituality….and of course Young Living. Sophie didn’t know about Young Living before she came to work for me, 13 months ago. As I sit back and watch her journey as she spirals deeper and deeper in love with our products, I realise what an honour it is to introduce someone to something (like our oils) that will change their life. Sometimes those changes happen in small ways, sometimes in big ways.

Do you know that feeling? If you don’t, maybe it’s time to reach out to someone you love, and share a Young Living product with them. We never know when someone will be ready. As the Hermetic saying goes, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears”…or, in today’s world, “When the need is there, the Young Living oil appears.”

So who can you help today, to change their life for the better? And if you’ve never used this particular oil before, you are in for a huuuuugggggeee treat.

What is it we fear so much about the great unknown?

I have been practicing the art of Surrender lately. I talk about it a lot in my Yoga classes but to be honest, it’s not something I’m very good at. The logic is neat and simple, but the practice is difficult. I get confused and caught up and stuck.

You might be wondering how I’ve made it all the way to 32 years of age without realising that I’m a control freak.

I remember being younger and ‘coping’ with stress and fear by trying to WILL things to be different; a habit which has caused me endless anxiety because trying to Will anything to go our way is not only exhausting, but also impossible.

But the world has been a bit of a turbulent place lately (have you noticed?), and there’s a lot going on that we cannot plan, predict, or prevent. Not just in the wider world, but in my little life, too.

When I first came to Australia from the UK back in 2019, it was on the understanding that 5 months later I would return home, to be Maid of Honour at my brother’s wedding… Sadly, life had other plans and as the pandemic unfolded, three slow years went by that I never got to visit my family.

In those early months, I wasted so much precious energy being angry at the situation, despite the fact that it was totally out of my control. And then one day, as I began to find some acceptance, seemingly out of nowhere (!) I met Frazer, the love of my life.

Well THAT wasn’t on the cards!!!

You see, control is a result of being attached to a specific outcome (the return flight, the wedding) – an outcome which we are sure is best for us (as we always know what’s best for us!). But when we trust that we’re OK no matter what the circumstances, we don’t NEED to micromanage our life and everyone around us. Instead, we let go, and open ourselves up to all sorts of wonderful possibilities (the man/woman of your dreams), that aren’t there when we’re attached to a certain “right” path.

So there you have it. Frazer and I now live together, and this year our Partner Visa was granted which allows me to stay in Australia indefinitely. Oh, and I finally realised after lots of self reflection that I was, indeed, a control freak.

Let the magic happen…

Well, clearly, I wasn’t the only one to notice this particular aspect of my personality. About 6 months ago, Artemis looked at me and said: “Sophie, have you ever tried Surrender oil? I replied no, and asked why. Artemis shrugged and mumbled something about feeling drawn to that specific oil for me. Needless to say you don’t ignore a hunch from Artemis, so I added it straight to my next ER order, half intrigued, half insulted.

I remember clearly the first time I smelled Surrender oil, because it felt like somebody coming along and pulling this giant weight off my shoulders. Like a huge, energetic sigh of relief. The harmony of Lavender, Black Spruce and Roman Chamomile was just perfect to me.

Since then, I’ve been using it so frequently – particularly in my journaling and self-reflection practice. I often apply 1-2 drops straight onto my Heart Chakra (when the Heart Chakra is open, we are able to receive the opportunities that are in alignment with our highest values), and sit in quiet contemplation, allowing the oil to work its magic – while saying something like this in my head..

“It’s OK to be afraid. It’s OK not to know. It’s OK to want to turn back. Allow the discomfort to be there. Stay, don’t run. Invite in grace.”

Other times, particularly when I’m feeling tense or stressed about a situation and I can’t seem to find the answer, I pop 3-4 drops in my diffuser – and before I know it, ‘the answer’ doesn’t seem that important at all anymore. The energy of surrender accomplishes much more than the energy of control. In surrender mode, I’m calm, peaceful and present in the moment. I see clearly and my vision extends, allowing me to see the bigger picture. The oil does that to me.

Most importantly, it has helped me to realise that Surrender is not about giving up, handing over power, or failing. It is not waving the white flag of defeat.

Surrender is the beautiful soft space of acceptance. It is an allowing – allowing life to unfold and to be what it is, irrespective of our agendas, expectations, and judgements. It’s that arms-wide-open energy that is deeply rooted in trust.

Surrender allows us to step into our lives, ready to receive, completely able to manifest and willing to embrace everything – the good, the bad and the ugly, with an open heart. It’s from this place that the real magic happens.

Consider this: ”Would letting go feel like freedom?”

In my case, it almost always would. Being receptive and allowing things to happen is not a natural skill but is something, with a little help from my friend Surrender oil, that I’m practicing daily. I’m still a work in progress. And you?
