What can our 7+ year old children teach us about essential oils?

2.05.2025

I was already in my 20’s by the time I discovered the power of essential oils, and what an amazing journey I’ve been on ever since. When I hear about children and teenagers growing up in an oily family and learning to use essential oils from such a young age, I’m a little envious.

What’s always amazed me is how attuned children become to essential oils. Often they are the ones running to their parents, asking for this or that oil to help their friend in need.

I was so excited last week to share the stories from our under 7 year olds about their favourite essential oils.

This is part 2 of the series, from children aged 7 and above. Some of these stories are ones I received years ago, some are brand new. You’ll also find some great child-friendly recipes included in this post, which I’m sure you will love. Enjoy!!!

Interview with Jahli (age 7):

I love Lavender oil, full stop! I love it when you help us Mum to make Lavender Lemonade when we play “restaurants”. It tastes soooo good!

Yeah…Lavender in my play dough is also lots of fun, and I love putting the oil in myself.

And I love you Mum when you massage me at bed time (with Lavender oil, of course).

Lavender Lemonade Recipe

Ingredients for the Lavender Syrup:

  • 2 cups of water
  • ½ cup of raw sugar or coconut sugar
  • ¼ cup of honey or coconut nectar
  • 3 tbsp of fresh or dried lavender buds

Ingredients for the Lemonade

  • 2 cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 4 cups of cold water (or use Soda Water if you
    want a fizzy Lemonade)
  • 1 lemon and a sprig of lavender for serving
  • 2 drops of Young Living Lavender oil
  • 6 drops of Young Living Lemon oil

Instructions

1. To make the Lavender Syrup, combine the two cups of water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium to high heat. Bring to the boil, and whisk the mixture until all the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and stir in the honey or coconut nectar and the fresh or dried lavender buds.

2. Cover for about 15 minutes, allowing the Lavender Syrup to steep. Then strain the mixture, using a spoon to help release all the juices and syrup into a bowl (while catching the lavender buds so they don’t end up in the bowl).

3. Next, you want to make the Lemonade itself. In a large jug, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice, Lavender oil, Lemon oil and cold water or Soda water. Add the Lavender Syrup that you’ve just made (see steps 1 and 2 above). If you wish, you can also add a drop of red and a drop of blue food colouring to the mixture to give it a lovely lavender colour (not necessary, but lots of fun).

Chill the Lemonade in the fridge for 30 minutes, and serve over fresh ice. Enjoy!

Jahli’s Play Dough recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of plain flour
  • ½ cup of salt
  • 2 tsp of cream of tartar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1½ tbsp cooking oil (eg. Safflower oil, although any liquid oil will work)
  • Food colouring (Jahli’s mum uses a natural powdered colour available at any good health food shop, but you can go for bright colours if you prefer)
  • 10 drops of your favourite essential oil – Jahli’s favourite is Lavender oil

Instructions

1. In a saucepan, stir the flour, salt and cream of tartar together.

2. Add the water, cooking oil and food colouring, and mix together until smooth.

3. Turn the heat to low or medium, and stir until the mixture forms into a ball.

4. Once the mixture has reached play dough consistency, remove it from the heat, and allow it to cool for a few minutes, then knead in the essential oils.

Store the Play Dough mix in an air tight container in the fridge. This will make it last longer.

Interview with Sienna (age 11):

……Mmmm……I have 2 favourite oils…… Stress Away oil is #1, because it helps me when I’m feeling panicked about something that’s worrying me.

I use 2 drops on the centre of my chest, and another drop on my wrists. I find it calms me down straight away, and then I can more easily talk to Mum about whatever is going on.

Lavender is my #2 oil, because we can do so much with Lavender, like make Fizzy Bath Bombs to help relax me before bed.

Lavender is always part of my night routine. Mum puts a drop on each side of our pillow before we go to bed, and she uses it with some other calming oils like Vetiver to massage into my feet before I go to sleep.

Sienna’s favourite DIY Fizzy bath bomb recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp of dried flowers (eg. lavender buds or rose petals)
  • 225g of Bicarb of Soda (Baking Soda)
  • 115g citric acid
  • 115g corn starch
  • 55g fine magnesium flakes
  • 55g epsom salts
  • 3/4 teaspoon of water
  • 2.5 tsp (that’s 12.5 mls, or almost a 15ml bottle) of your favourite Young Living essential oil or blend (Sienna’s favourite mix is a combination of equal parts of Lavender, Orange, Ylang Ylang and Copaiba oils)
  • 2.5 tsp of almond oil
  • 6 drops of food colouring if you want your fizzes to be coloured
  • Silicon moulds, or any moulds of your choice

Directions

  1. Sprinkle half a teaspoon of the dried flowers into the bottom of each mould
  2. In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the water, essential oil, almond oil, and food colouring (if you choose to use it).
  4. Next, whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until the mixture begins to clump together. If needed, you can add one drop of water at a time to make the mixture clump. Be careful not to add too much water or the mould will be too liquidy and won’t set properly.
  5. Press the mixture into the moulds (see pic below). Allow it to dry at room temperature for 24 hours.
  6. Remove the bath bombs from the moulds, place in a hot bath (the kids love this part) and watch it fizz!

This mixture makes up around 10-15 bath bombs (depending on the size of your moulds).

Interview with Isaac, age 12:

Sacred Mountain has helped me over the past two years in a number of ways, such as; sleep, anger management and responsibility for my actions.

In 2016, my Mum asked me if I would like to try an oil, it was called Sacred Mountain. I agreed and kept it on my bedside table.

Some of the things that helped me go to bed earlier was rubbing it on my neck and I would fall asleep quicker. Rubbing it on my chest helped me calm down and make me less angry, and I’ve taken more care and more responsibility for my actions. Sacred Mountain has been a great help over the past two years and I still use it to this day.

Alison S. writes:

When my son Paikea started at the local Steiner school, he really struggled with anxiousness and feeling settled in the classroom. He was 7 at the time.

I made him his own essential oil roller with 7 drops each of Valor and Peace & Calming, and I topped the 10ml roller up with V6 oil.

I explained to the teacher how it will support him, and she was very happy for him to use it. After the first two days of using it, the teacher rang me to tell me what an incredible difference it had made – not only to my son, but also for the other children in the class. By the next week we had that combination diffusing in the class room, and two weeks later every class room had essential oils diffusing!!!

Jenna L. writes:

I regularly diffuse Egyptian Gold essential oil through our home. It’s a great blend for grounding. We have a high needs child with ADHD, ASD, ODD, etc. so having essential oils on hand to create a calm home is helpful for all of us. I diffuse different oils in the house and bedrooms for different reasons. My other favourite oil to diffuse is Frankincense oil. Parker (aged 9) loves having Lavender oil added to his bath.

“It smells good and makes me calm,” he says, “And Mum puts some on in my room to make it smell good.”

His sister Amara (aged 12) says: “I don’t like the smell of all of them, but Mum has always used Lavender oil and sometimes also Peppermint oil in our baths. Mum has a cupboard full of oils, so she’s always putting oils on us for this or that.”

Artemis writes:

Going to school can be an exciting time, but also an anxious one. Lots of kids (and their parents) feel nervous in the buildup to starting a new term. This is really common, but that doesn’t make it any less stressful. How empowering for our little ones to be able to use Young Living’s essential oils, to help build their confidence and self-esteem when they’re feeling nervous.

Amaya P. (age 7) writes:

I like Stress Away and Believe oil. I put them on my wrists before I go to school so I don’t feel anxious and scared about what’s gonna happen. And sometimes I choose one to put on at night time. I put them on my head, behind my ears, or on my wrists. Mum put them on me before I went bike riding for the first time.

Kara T. writes:

Our little princess Tori loves making rollers for family and friends. She’s 7 and just starting to research what oil combinations are good for.

Her favourite recipe to make is her Happy Heart roller. In a 10ml roller bottle she uses the following essential oils, and tops up with some V6 or MCT oil:

  • 8 drops Ylang Ylang
  • 8 drops Bergamot
  • 6 drops Lime

Nicole B. writes:

My teenage daughter absolutely LOVES her lip balms using them morning and night every day. “

“They are so smooth and buttery with the smell making them even more delicious.”

Can you tell from her description that she attends my workshops and hears the way I talk about our products? Teach ’em young, I say!
