What our children teach us about essential oils – Part 2

19.07.2018

I was so excited last week to hear from some of our Oily Kids about their favourite essential oils, and why they love those particular oils. Instead of us as adults being the teachers, we become the students, and learn from the wisdom of our children.

Interview with Jahli (age 7)

I love Lavender oil, full stop! I love it when you help us Mum to make Lavender Lemonade when we play “restaurants”. It tastes soooogood!

Yeah…Lavender in my play dough is also lots of fun, and I love putting the oil in myself.

And I love you Mum when you massage me at bed time (with Lavender oil, of course).

Lavender Lemonade Recipe

Ingredients for the Lavender Syrup:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of raw sugar or coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup of honey or coconut nectar
  • 3 tablespoons of fresh or dried lavender buds

Ingredients for the Lemonade

  • 2 cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 4 cups of cold water (or use Soda Water if you want a a fizzy Lemonade)
  • 1 lemon and a sprig of lavender for serving
  • 2 drops of Young Living Lavender oil
  • 6 drops of Young Living Lemon oil

Instructions

1. To make the Lavender Syrup, combine the two cups of water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium to high heat. Bring to the boil, and whisk the mixture until all the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and stir in the honey or coconut nectar and the fresh or dried lavender buds.

2. Cover for about 15 minutes, allowing the Lavender Syrup to steep. Then strain the mixture, using a spoon to help release all the juices and syrup into a bowl (while catching the lavender buds so they don’t end up in the bowl).

3. Next, you want to make the Lemonade itself. In a large jug, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice, Lavender oil, Lemon oil and cold water or Soda water. Add the Lavender Syrup that you’ve just made (see steps 1 and 2 above). If you wish, you can also add a drop of red and a drop of blue food colouring to the mixture to give it a lovely lavender colour (not necessary, but lots of fun).

Chill the Lemonade in the fridge for 30 minutes, and serve over fresh ice. Enjoy!

Jahli’s Play Dough recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of plain flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1.5 tablespoons of cooking oil (eg. Safflower oil, although any liquid oil will work)
  • Food colouring (Jahli’s mum uses a natural powdered colour, available at any good health food shop, but you can go for bright colours if you prefer)
  • 10 drops of your favourite essential oil – Jahli’s favourite is Lavender oil

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, stir the flour, salt and cream of tartar together.
  2. Add the water, cooking oil and food colouring, and mix together until smooth.
  3. Turn the heat to low or medium, and stir until the mixture forms into a ball.
  4. Once the mixture has reached play dough consistency, remove it from the heat, and allow it to cool for a few minutes, then knead in the essential oils.

Store the Play Dough mix in an air tight container in the fridge. This will make it last longer.

Interview with Sienna (age 11):

……Mmmm……I have 2 favourite oils……

Stress Away oil is #1, because it helps me when I’m feeling panicked about something that’s worrying me.

I use 2 drops on the centre of my chest, and another drop on my wrists. I find it calms me down straight away, and then I can more easily talk to Mum about whatever is going on.

Lavender is my #2 oil, because we can do so much with Lavender, like make Fizzy Bath Bombs to help relax me before bed.

Lavender is always part of my night routine. Mum puts a drop on each side of our pillow before we go to bed, and she uses it with some other calming oils like Vetiver to massage into my feet before I go to sleep.

Sienna’s favourite DIY Fizzy
bath bomb recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of dried flowers (eg. lavender buds or rose petals)
  • 225g of Bicarb of Soda (Baking Soda)
  • 115g citric acid
  • 115g corn starch
  • 55g fine magnesium flakes
  • 55g epsom salts
  • 3/4 teaspoon of water
  • 2.5 teaspoons (that’s 12.5 mls, or almost a 15ml bottle) of your favourite Young Living essential oil or blend (Sienna’s favourite mix is a combination of equal parts of Lavender, Orange, Ylang Ylang and Copaiba oils)
  • 2.5 teaspoons of almond oil
  • 6 drops of food colouring if you want your fizzes to be coloured
  • Silicon moulds, or any moulds of your choice

Directions

  1. Sprinkle half a teaspoon of the dried flowers into the bottom of each mould
  2. In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the water, essential oil, almond oil, and food colouring (if you choose to use it).
  4. Next, whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until the mixture begins to clump together. If needed, you can add one drop of water at a time to make the mixture clump. Be careful not to add too much water or the mould will be too liquidy and won’t set properly.
  5. Press the mixture into the moulds (see pic below). Allow it to dry at room temperature for 24 hours.
  6. Remove the bath bombs from the moulds, place in a hot bath (the kids love this part) and watch it fizz!

This mixture makes up around 10-15 bath bombs (depending on the size of your moulds).

Interview with Isaac, age 12

Isaac says: Sacred Mountain has helped me over the past two years in a number of ways, such as; sleep, anger management and responsibility for my actions.

In 2016, my Mum asked me if I would like to try an oil, it was called Sacred Mountain. I agreed and kept it on my bedside table.

Some of the things that helped me go to bed earlier was rubbing it on my neck and I would fall asleep quicker or my chest to calm me down.

It helped me calm down and due to that, I have lowered my anger and have taken more care to more responsibility of my actions.

Sacred Mountain has been a great help over the past two years and I still use it to this day.

Falling in love with oils at age 2

Margit writes: My essential oil bottles are the favourite ‘toys’ of my 2 year old Angel. She takes her time arranging them, and carefully holding, feeling and looking at them.

She’s the one responsible for turning on the diffuser at bedtime in the bedroom with Lavender oil.

When getting dressed she puts up her feet to receive a drop of oil on bottom of her feet.

She is also a great intuitive helper when it comes to choose an oil.

I gave my partner a Raindrop Technique last night. While I did the Valor Balance, our daughter went to the table where I had some additional oils, and she picked White Angelica. She wanted me to put on a drop on her father’s forehead.

After the session he mentioned that this oil was just so perfect for the moment to clear his mind, calming him, catapulting him into total awareness.

It’s such a blessing to see her growing up with this amazing powerful “magic in a bottle” at her fingertips.
