Do you know the best essential oils for grounding?

19.10.2023

I’m sure you would agree that we are going through some very challenging times in our world. We’ve just popped our head up after a pandemic, whose ripple effects are still being felt in individual lives and globally. We’ve been through floods, fire and drought. In fact, the latest round of bushfires have been raging less than 10km from my home.

And have you noticed the ripple effects of all this “unsettledness” into your personal relationships? I sure have!

In such challenging times, I’ve found my most important “medicine” has been to ground and clear myself. Personal practices like these are critical in order to help us stay balanced in a world that’s out of balance.

How do I ground myself? I walk on the beach. I lie on the grass and let the sunshine kiss me. I cuddle my cats (yes, animals are soooooo grounding to be around). I take a 30 second cold shower at the end of my hot shower. I get up early and sun gaze. And I use my essential oils in combination with any of these practices to amplify my grounding even further.

Are you curious how to do that? Many of you know Sophie, who works with me at The Oil Temple. Sophie’s love of Young Living began just over 2 years ago when she started working with me….and today’s bulletin is her creation. I’m sure you will love it as much as I have! Thanks Sophie!!!!

Bring yourself back down to Earth

You have probably heard the term ‘Grounding’ used throughout your wellness journey. Grounding is the process by which we find balance in our emotional, physical, and spiritual state by enforcing a connection with the Earth.

We can talk about the concept of Grounding on multiple levels:

  • Physically grounded – our connection to Earth
  • Emotionally grounded – where our thoughts and emotions move freely and without restriction
  • Spiritually grounded – where our connection to our “spirit” or “source” is open and abundant

Grounding can be achieved in multiple ways. Consuming high-vibrational, plant-based food, being surrounded by nature, and dipping your toes in the ocean are all considered to be grounding activities. Many yoga postures are also popular because they connect the body to the earth through the base of the spine, allowing energy to be exchanged freely.

Using essential oils for grounding around the home, on the body, or in meditation practice can aid this process.

As we know, essential oils are derived from plants, often trees, which have a naturally strong connection to the Earth, so it’s not surprising that they are particularly effective at facilitating grounding in their users.

When we connect with the Earth we find our thoughts and emotions are able to run without inhibition, and our personal and professional lives can flourish without the restrictions of anxiety, compulsiveness, or strain.

When we’re grounded, we make better choices, spend our time more intentionally, add more value, give abundantly to others, and have way more fun! When we’re connected to this place, everything flows.

Depending on what “grounding” means for you, some essential oils may resonate with you more than others. For some, it may be the woodsy aroma grounding you in the physical connection to our earth. For others, an emotional grounding to a familiar floral scent, or a scent that supports a deeper connection with spirit and/or the universal energies.

Below I’ve shared with you my 5 favourite Grounding oils. This selection is by no means a list of all the oils I would consider using in my Grounding practices… I recommend you trust your intuition and if an oil calls to you, use it!

Grounding oil

Of course Young Living has a blend named Grounding! This is a unique combination of White Fir, Black Spruce, Ylang Ylang, Pine, Cedarwood, Angelica and Juniper. It conjures feelings of stability, clarity, and spirituality.

Grounding’s warm and comforting aroma can create an atmosphere that is perfect for finding self-awareness and confronting negative emotions.

To bring yourself back into the present moment, try applying a drop of Grounding to your left palm – rub 3 times clockwise with your right palm and then place your hands in front of your nose. Take 1-2 minutes to absorb the fragrance. What does it do to you?

Or for a quick and easy, daily dose of Grounding, add a few drops into a spray bottle filled with water, lightly spritzing hair and body for an instant pick-me-up.

Vetiver

Vetiver is an emotionally grounding, soothing essential oil that brings you back to yourself and into connection with Mother Earth, with the very first breath.

Its heavy, earthy fragrance (similar to Patchouli with a touch of lemon), reminds you that everything in life follows a cycle, and the best way to avoid getting under the waves of life is to ride them, rather than resisting them.

Why not devote a day to your Root Chakra and to yourself? Apply 1-3 drops of Vetiver to your coccyx and rub the whole spine from neck to coccyx… feel how you are solidly grounded and at the same time connected to Mother Earth. Make time to practise your Warrior poses, give yourself 15 minutes on a Root Chakra balancing meditation and finish your day with a hearty, grounding dinner.

Cedarwood

One of the first ever distilled essential oils, ancient Cedarwood has been found to improve focus, and helps to promote a more present, grounded feeling.

Cedarwood oil comes from the wood, bark, and sawdust of Cedar and Juniper trees through steam distillation (a process similar to the production of Sandalwood oil).

Cedarwood essential oil has protective properties that are excellent for promoting security and safety.

Since insecurity, anxiety, and fear are among the biggest concerns for a blocked Root Chakra, Cedarwood oil is one the best choices! Like a nurturing hug, this oil reminds us that we’re not alone and reassures us that our basic needs are being met.

On days when you feel frustrated, try diffusing 6-7 drops of Cedarwood in your living space and notice the sense that you’re amongst the trees. Observe how the “woodsy” and “warm” scent calms and cools your environment, giving you a feeling of ease and confidence in your capabilities.

Sacred Mountain

A perfect blend of Ylang Ylang, Black Spruce, Balsam and Cedarwood that evokes the sense of sanctity found in nature, and promotes feelings of strength, empowerment and protection. You may feel like you are in a sacred environment, especially if earth grounding is important to your practice.

Try applying 2 drops on each shoulder and up your neck (it contains some great oils for relaxing tight muscles, so I love to pamper my neck in this way), then sit quietly and look outside at the trees.

This blend was created by Gary to make us feel protected under the canopy of the forest, like little creatures that are safe. Take some deep breaths and remind yourself that it’s safe to be vulnerable, and express yourself in this world.

Valor

As the name connotes, this oil increases feelings of courage, strength and self-esteem — your ability to tap into your own internal resources. One of Young Living’s most popular blends, its woodsy, positive scent comes from a blend of Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, and Frankincense; a combination of oils that the Roman Soldiers wore into battle!

Valor oil lets us feel “unstoppable”. It balances our electrical energy field (our aura), so it helps us release from our aura any sense of disruption, misalignment or shock. It brings us into complete presence with our Self….and it also has the same frequency as our skeleton, so it invites our whole body to come into perfect balance.

Place 3 drops of Valor oil into your right palm, and rub it 3 times clockwise under your right foot. Then place 3 drops of Valor oil into your left palm, and rub it 3 times clockwise under your left foot. Optional: sit comfortably, and place your left palm under your left foot, and your right palm under your right foot. Hold like that for a few minutes. Become aware of your breathing, and allow yourself to relax and let go of any thoughts or worries so that you can be completely present with yourself. We call this step a “Valor Balance”.

Much like the creative process is individual, so are your oily preferences. Depending on what you’re working on (or processing through) there is an oil that may help. What works well for you may not work well for others and vice-a-versa. When choosing your oils start with the ones that appeal to you the most and slowly experiment from there. Enjoy!
