Fab 5 #3 – The Thieves Range

14.07.2022

If you are new to our Oil Temple essential oils bulletin, welcome! Today is week 3 in a 5 part series, where I’m sharing my all time favourite Young Living oil-infused products that I’d never want to be without.

Week 1 was the “Red Drink” – a magical cocktail combining NingXia Red, Sulfurzyme and Lime oil. If you live in the US, that will be Lime Vitality Oil, and in Europe where Lime Plus oil is not yet available, you can substitute with Orange Plus oil or Tangerine Plus oil….or even Young Living’s wonderful Golden Turmeric.

Week 2 was not just one toothpaste, but two! That’s Thieves Whitening Toothpaste for my teeth, and Thieves Dentarome Plus toothpaste as the best underarm deodorant I’ve ever used. Yep – once you try it, you’ll never want to stop.

And for this week, it’s the whole Thieves range of products. I use these in every corner of my home. And you know what’s really lovely? People come into my home and they comment on how amazing it “feels”.

I know that’s because of the lovely land that my home sits on – full of birds and trees and possums and koalas. It’s because of the essential oils I diffuse. And it’s also because I avoid chemicals, and everything I use is based around Young Living’s all natural personal care and cleaning products. Let me take you on a journey through this range today, and my favourite uses for these products.

Wondering why it’s called Thieves?

The products in this range are all based on Thieves essential oil blend, which is a very unique blend of spicy, therapeutic-grade essential oils of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary. This blend was inspired by four thieves in Medieval Europe, who anointed themselves with a vinegar containing many of these same protective herbs and spices.

Killing Mould around the home

This is an extremely “hot” topic for us in Australia, especially where I live in Byron Bay where we’ve had not just one but two rounds of flooding this year. It’s a humid environment to start with, and mould is growing everywhere. But this isn’t my first experience with mould.

I’ve owned investment properties for many years now, and sometimes tenants have mentioned mould issues. I remember one home where there was a tiny bit of mould growing on a low sloping ceiling. I turned up with my “secret recipe” and applied it to that patch. About six months later, the tenant contacted me because mould had appeared again. When I went to check it out, mould was growing again on the ceiling….but NOT on that one patch I had cleaned with my secret recipe. Wow!

Another home had a wall with a free standing wardrobe in front of it. When the tenants moved the wardrobe, there was mould behind it. This time it was Noel who went and attended to it using my “secret recipe”….and although we owned that property for another 6 years after that time, the mould NEVER appeared again.

So what’s my secret recipe? It’s so simple! I get a sponge, and onto it I pour a bit of Thieves Household Cleaner (probably about a tablespoon’s worth). Then I put 6 drops of Thieves oil over the top. I put a mask on so I’m not breathing in the mould spores, and I wipe over the area of mould. Then (whenever possible) I run my diffuser with Thieves oil in it, to kill off any mould spores. If I get the opportunity, I will run it for 48 hours straight. Where possible, I’ll use a nebulising diffuser like the AromaLux. If you don’t have access to that diffuser, then use an ultrasonic diffuser instead. I just prefer the nebulising diffusers when I’m working with mould, as they don’t add extra moisture into the atmosphere.

If you are curious about the different styles of diffuser and what I mean by a nebulising or atomizing diffuser, click here to read a blog I’ve written on this topic.

Once we had a whole ceiling that was covered in mould. Noel got super creative, and got a paint tray. Into it he poured a 426ml bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner (yes, the whole bottle!), and then we emptied a full bottle of Thieves oil into it. Then he either used a paint roller to roll it onto the ceiling (or he might have even sprayed it on with a paint sprayer, which would have worked just as well).

We didn’t even bother about washing it off!!! We just left it to dry, knowing it would work its magic, then we painted over the top. And in the next 8 or 10 years, no mould ever grew on that ceiling.

Why does it work? Well, Thieves essential oil blend was used in a 1997 Weber State university study, and it was scientifically proven to kill over 99.3% of bacteria when it was diffused. It was also effective against surface mould and mildew.

The most cost-effective cleaning solution I’ve found

But of course Thieves Household Cleaner isn’t just for cleaning mould and mildew. It’s an all-purpose, highly concentrated cleaner made from 100% plant and mineral based ingredients. It’s completely biodegradable, and it’s safe for use in septic systems and biocycles. I know – because I have a biocycle, and the wonderful man who comes out to check my biocycle tells me that mine is one of the healthiest ones he’s seen. So I know that not only am I very healthy on the inside, but I’m also using products that are very gentle and kind on this septic-style system. No nasties go down my drains!

Thieves Household Cleaner comes in 2 different sizes. There’s a 426ml size, which makes up 14.2 litres of all-purpose cleaner, and a 1.8 litre refill which makes up 60 litres of all-purpose cleaner.

Here’s how I make up my household cleaner spray:

I take a 500ml glass spray bottle (or you can use PET plastic if you are concerned about dropping a glass container). I put a funnel in the top of it, and pour 15ml (1 Tablespoon) of Thieves Household Cleaner into the bottle. Then I add a concoction of oils, and I top up with water. If I didn’t add the oils, this mix would cost me AUD$1.22 (excluding the bottle). Now that’s a very inexpensive household spray.

So why do I add extra oils to it, given that it already has the Thieves oil in it? It’s simply because I love the aroma of it with other oils in there as well. My favourite combo is 6 drops each of Lavender, Orange and Lemon Myrtle oil. But some people prefer to use 6 drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Thieves oil. So have fun and try some innovative oil concoctions in your cleaning solution.

It can also be used as an oven and grout cleaner, a stain remover, a floor wash, a window and glass cleaner, and even as a soft scrub. There are heaps of great recipes to be found online using Thieves Household Cleaner.

But check this out – this is my best buddy Alison cleaning her fireplace….

Out and About, I’d never be without this!

Although Thieves Household Cleaner is one of my most frequently used products in the Thieves Range, I have to say it’s impossible for me to choose a favourite, because every one of the Thieves Range products is amazing!

I’m not sure if you are aware that I do wildlife rescues in my spare time. It’s a beautiful way to give back to nature, because nature has given so much to me. And yes, I’m a little bit crazy, because snakes have become my creature of choice to work with. So that means that I have my hands in snake poo when I clean out their enclosures, and I’m aware that they carry salmonella on their skin, so I’m always careful after handling them or giving them injections to make sure I sanitize my hands.

I have a 2 step process when I’m at home. Firstly, I have the Thieves Hand Sanitizer (the refill size, ie. the 225ml bottle) sitting in my treatment room where I keep snakes that are in intensive care and require regular injections, etc. This room is part of my garage. After handling a snake, I disinfect my hands with the hand sanitizer. But then, if I’m about to go and handle a different snake and want to be super cautious not to transmit anything from one snake to another, I go inside my home to my hand basin, and I then wash my hands with Young Living’s Thieves Foaming Hand Soap (although I could just as easily use their Thieves Bar Soap)….. but I absolutely love the feel and the smell of this foaming hand soap (although I confess I also love the Lavender one, the Luscious Lemon one, and the Winter Nights one….hmmm, it’s so hard to choose!).

But for the snakes, I use Thieves as I figure it’s probably the strongest of all of the range. And I carry not one but two x 29ml pocket sized Thieves Hand Sanitizers in my handbag, to use when I’m out and about after I’ve used a public wash room, or before I sit down to eat a meal. In today’s crazy modern world, it just makes sense to be attentive to personal hygiene when we’re mingling with others.

Some people prefer to use the Thieves Spray and carry that in their pocket or handbag, or even the Thieves wipes. They are all great options within this range for keeping surfaces and hands clean and sanitized.

Food that doesn’t just taste good – it radiates health!!!

Every Thursday morning I’m up at 6am to head to my local farmer’s markets. Why so early? It’s because they are super popular, and I prefer to get the pick of the nicest fruit and veggies in town. 🙂

Even though I am mostly purchasing organic food, it still can sometimes have fertilizers and organic-approved sprays used on it. And of course there’s all that dirt and dust that gets onto it. And I sometimes wonder how many hands have been fondling my fruit and veggies before I get to them.

So I love, love, LOVE Young Living’s  Thieves Fruit & Veggie Soak.

This works so much better than vinegar and water, because it contains natural surfactants that do an awesome job of stripping chemicals, waxes, residues and dirt off our fresh produce.

Not only does the food taste even better and give me peace of mind that it’s clean and healthy for me to eat, but it also carries this beautiful vibration thanks to the essential oils in the Thieves Fruit & Veggie Soak. Call me crazy, but I actually find it difficult to eat fresh salads and produce at my home when I haven’t soaked it first.

So every Thursday morning I set up my sink full of water and the Thieves Fruit & Veggie Soak, and another sink with purified water in for rinsing, and away I go….I soak for 2 minutes, rinse, and then pop it out on the bench to air dry. Then it goes away in the fridge.

And I have to say, providing I’ve air dried it so none of the moisture remains, my friesh produce easily lasts a couple of weeks in the fridge. It’s quite incredible. And on the rare occasion that I buy something non-organic, it helps to know that I’m cleaning those chemical residues off the outside of the produce.

And it’s so cost effective! One bottle would easily last me 6 to 9 months of weekly washes, depending on how much produce I’ve bought. There are 95 washes in a bottle (simply use 5ml = 1 teaspoon in 2.5 litres of water).

Turning washing from chore to joy

Gary Young, the founder of Young Living, was always so persistent in his message to us. It was about the importance of ditching those chemicals, and switching to all-natural products.

Why is this? It’s because every chemical we get exposed to in our personal care and cleaning products gets absorbed through our skin, and ends up having to be broken down by our liver. Well, that wouldn’t be a major issue – after all, our liver is designed to break down chemicals. But the problem comes with the sheer volume of chemicals we are exposed to every single day. Over time, our liver just can’t keep up, and we develop what’s called “bioaccumulation”, ie; an accumulation of toxins and heavy metals in our body.

Would it surprise you to know that most laundry detergents are not soap-based? They use synthetic chemicals made from petroleum (ie. petrochemicals) as their cleaning agent. Most have never been tested for safety.

They also contain optical brighteners, which leave a chemical residue on your clothes. This reflects UV light, tricking your eyes into thinking your clothes are cleaner and brighter than they actually are. And many contain synthetic fragrances such as phthalates, which are powerful hormone disrupters, and are contributing to a whole host of imbalances in the human body.

Help to create a safer world, and save money at the same time. Choosing low-tox personal care and cleaning products like those available from Young Living empowers the health of your human and animal family, and is kind to our Planet.

So the simple answer is to “Ditch and Switch”. Clean those chemicals out of your home, and replace with all natural products like the Thieves Range!!

The beautiful thing I’ve noticed is how “hooked” I’ve become on the Young Living equivalent to my previous favourite all-natural brands. It’s not just from the high quality ingredients in the Young Living products. It’s also thanks to the vibrational and uplifting effects of the essential oils.

If you came to my home, it looks like a Young Living billboard. Young Living is literally on every shelf of my fridge and cupboards, and in every corner of every room.

So of course the Thieves Laundry Soap and the Thieves Dish Soap are an absolute “must” in my weekly regime. And like all of Young Living’s products, they are super concentrated – a little goes such a long way. You only need 1/4 cap of Laundry Soap in a full load. If my clothes happen to smell musty because I’ve sweated in them and not washed them right away, I’ll add some drops of essential oil (like Purification oil) into the Laundry Soap before it goes into the wash…..but that’s just on those very rare occasions that I want even more “punch”. And even without the Purification oil, my clothes come out smelling amazing and looking clean.

In fact, it’s amazing how often people hug me and comment on my beautiful aroma, and I realise I forgot to put my oils on that morning! It has to be coming out of my pores, out of my clothing, and from the Young Living shampoo in my hair!!

Froth and Bubbles

In the kitchen, I use the Thieves Dish Soap. Now, this is a non-foaming triple-concentrate, so 1 bottlle is equivalent to 3 bottles of regular dishwashing liquid. You’ll get 355 washes from a bottle (or 3 months’ supply at 4 washes a day).

And best of all, Thieves Laundry Soap and Thieves Dish Soap are plant and mineral-based formulas which are 100% natural and safe for our planet.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that there are no bubbles in the Thieves Dish Soap….but if you love bubbles, try this simple recipe…

To make your Thieves Dish Soap foam:

Simply dispense two-thirds of a bottle of Thieves Dish Soap concentrate in a container for future use. That leaves a third in your bottle. Add a teaspoon of Bicarb of Soda (baking soda) and stir with a chopstick. Add warm to hot water, and gently tip the bottle upside down till it’s thoroughly mixed. Then add it to your dish wand or use it like regular dishwashing liquid.

Another great hack is to split your Dish Soap concentrate between two bottles, and add 1 cap (10ml) of Thieves Household Cleaner into each bottle, and fill with water.

The Dish Soap is still as effective, you still don’t need to use much, and it foams more easily because the added water crates more friction. And this gives you 2 bottles for the price of one!

Pampering your Pearly Whites

Last week I spoke about how amazing our Thieves Whitening Toothpaste is. However, that’s not the only product in our Thieves dental range. We also have Thieves Mouthwash, and Thieves Dental Floss.

Most commercial mouthwashes are alcohol-based. Unfortunately, the alcohol kills both the good and the bad bacteria in your mouth, weakening your mouth’s natural defense system and allowing an invasion of bad bacteria (that actually contributes to bad breath). Alcohol also erodes your mouth’s protective mucous and saliva, allowing plaque to build up, which contributes to bad breath – so you end up in a vicious cycle where the very product that is meant to help your breath is potentially contributing to the problem. And of course commercial mouthwashes often contain artificial dyes, peroxide, fluoride and more.

That’s why Thieves Mouthwash is such a breath of fresh air! It contains:

You can even use it as an out and about breath freshener. Simply fill a 10-15ml spray bottle with Thieves Mouthwash, and add 1 to 2 drops of Spearmint or Peppermint oil! Voila! And did you know that most commercial dental floss is coated with Teflon and contains petroleum-based dyes and artificial sweeteners?

Thieves Dental Floss uses bees wax and soy wax, and is soaked in the fortifying power of Thieves essential oil.

So if you haven’t already switched to the Thieves Dental range, make sure you give them a try as you run out of your current brand (or jump in the deep end and do a complete “Ditch and Switch”. I have no doubt that you will love them as much as I do!!!
