Here’s a simple thing you can do to protect your brain health

22.08.2025

Brain health is a topic that’s close to my heart. When my father was in his late 70’s he developed dementia.

I found it so challenging to watch my strong and intelligent father lose so much of his cognitive function, and become like a child.

As much as I wanted to help him emotionally with some essential oils, he would accept no help from anyone except my Mum. It was only on his deathbed (age 85) that he finally asked me to put oils on him (which allowed a beautiful connection to happen between us – one that was very much needed).

Protecting my own brain health is extremely important to me. It’s one of the reasons I love to drink NingXia Red each day. Being a high antioxidant superjuice, I know that it’s helping every cell in my body to stay hydrated and full of vitality.

But did you know that our brain health is also impacted by our oral health? That’s what this bulletin is all about. Enjoy!

Your brain health is impacted by your oral health

In 2025 in Australia alone, an estimated 433,300 people (1.55% of our population of 27.9 million) are living with dementia. This number is expected to almost double by 2058. This is soooooo significant, as dementia is the leading cause of death, disability and dependency for women.

It’s not surprising that many people suffering from dementia also have poor oral hygiene, due to decreases in self-care and finger agility, and impaired memory. However, recent studies1 have shown that tooth loss, a misaligned bite and oral dysfunction could also be an important trigger for the onset of dementia.

A 2018 study2 went on to conclude that gingivitis, tooth decay, cavities and tooth loss appear to be associated with an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia.

Knowing that, I feel even more inspired to take beautiful care of my mouth, teeth and gums. And of course I want to use natural products that will enhance not only my oral health but also my overall health, and not add extra nasties into my body. That’s where Young Living’s dental range is such a great win-win solution.

Here’s your safe, natural solution to oral health….

If you’re wanting to enhance your oral health routines, here are 4 tips from Young Living’s range to help you. 3 of these tips involve products from our Thieves Dental Range.

It’s a funny name, isn’t it. Thieves!!!!! That’s because this range of dental products is based on a powerful and potent essential oil blend from Young Living called “Thieves”. This oil blend was inspired by remarkable stories of four thieves during medieval

times, and the “four thieves vinegar” they created. Google “four thieves vinegar” to find out more.

Thieves oil blend combines Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata and Rosemary essential oils. It’s one of those “must have” oils during the winter months, to protect and fortify our body. I love putting a few drops under each foot, or 5 to 15 drops in my diffuser, to keep me healthy and vibrant.

It’s proven sooooooo effective that Young Living has made it the basis for their Dental range.

#1 – Thieves Whitening Toothpaste

Although Young Living has 4 different toothpastes to choose from (including one for children), my all-time favourite is Thieves Whitening Toothpaste. This amazing toothpaste naturally polishes and whitens teeth, and it tastes delicious thanks to the Orange oil in it. My teeth are brighter and feel incredibly clean and polished.

Thieves Whitening Toothpaste contains hydroxyapatite. This amazing ingredient is renowned for restoring lost minerals in tooth enamel, reversing early signs of tooth decay and strengthening teeth.

By strengthening the enamel, it makes the teeth more resistant to cavities, and because it repairs microscopic cracks and lesions, it in turn helps reduce tooth sensitivity (eg. to hot and cold food and beverages).

Thieves Whitening Toothpaste uses ethically sourced, all-natural ingredients. In addition to calcium hydroxyapatite, it contains coconut oil, glycerin, silica and xylitol, as well as calcium carbonate, perlite, zinc citrate

trihydrate and sodium myristoyl glutamate, plus xanthan gum and stevia.

‘It’s then fortified and flavoured with the therapeutic-grade essential oils of Peppermint, Spearmint, Ocotea and Thieves.

Check out this video by the late Dr. Mike Buch, where he explains why this toothpaste is so effective at polishing and whitening our teeth, yet so gentle on our teeth at the same time.

Here’s what our customers have to say….

Maria C. writes:

After using the Thieves Whitening Toothpaste for the very first time, I noticed black tea stains on my teeth were reduced by at least 50%!!! I was blown away! And it tastes great too.

Eva-Lotta B. writes:

I love the flavour of Thieves Whitening Toothpaste and the results, and even better is that both the kids absolutely love, love LOVE it too!!! Here I thought I was buying it just for myself.

Jenni C. writes:

I use the Thieves Whitening Toothpaste without water for its polishing action, and my yellowed teeth from a lifetime of “interesting” food are much whiter these days. I’m a happy lassy!

Brigid N. writes:

I’ve been using the Thieves Whitening Toothpaste for 2 months now, and I absolutely love it. I had to be careful with allergies and how ordinary toothpaste would peel the skin off in my mouth. The Thieves Whitening Toothpaste doesn’t do that. The paste leaves a fresh taste in my mouth without that horrible chemical taste. And my teeth stay noticeably cleaner for most of the day. They definitely have a brighter, shinier look and feel to them!

Alison S. writes:

I am loving the new Thieves Whitening Toothpaste!!! Not only do my teeth feel amazing, they’re so clean and white. I have extremely sensitive teeth, and it’s the best natural toothpaste I’ve ever used. It whitens my teeth without making them sensitive.

#2 – Regular Flossing with Thieves Dental Floss

We all know that trapped food particles in our gums attract bacteria, which in turn leads to inflammation of the gums. So we want to floss.

But did you know that most commercial dental floss contains petroleum-based dyes, artificial sweeteners, and is coated with Teflon (so it slides between your teeth better)?

Young Living’s dental floss uses bees wax and soy wax, and it’s soaked in Thieves essential oil…so it’s a truly healthy flossing experience.

#3 – Gargle twice a day with Thieves Mouthwash

Using a natural, fortified mouthwash is so beneficial to our teeth and gums. But you need to have the right mouthwash, as they are not all created equal.

According to Wikipedia3, when Listerine was first created in 1879, it was marketed as a floor cleaner, a surgical antiseptic, and a cure for gonorrhea. Eeek!!!! Then in the 1920’s, Listerine began promoting their mouthwash as a cure for bad breath, and in less than 10 years their sales increased almost 8000%.

The Dangers of Alcohol-Based Mouthwash

Today, we have a huge range of commercial mouthwashes to choose from. Unfortunately many of these contain alcohol in addition to a range of other potentially harmful ingredients, and they act indiscriminately on our oral microbiome.

The alcohol in commercial mouthwashes kills the good bacteria in our mouth along with the bad. This weakens our mouth’s natural immune system and paves the way for an invasion of bad bacteria.

The alcohol also erodes the protective mucous and saliva of the mouth, allowing plaque to build up more easily, which in turn creates bad breath. It’s a vicious cycle. This also contributes to the increased risk of developing oral cancer4.

Thieves Mouthwash – a truly Healthy Alternative

Thieves Mouthwash is a great alternative. It contains NO alcohol, artificial flavours, synthetic dyes or sweeteners. Instead, it uses powerful natural ingredients and therapeutic grade essential oils (Peppermint, Spearmint, Vetiver and Thieves), and it’s sweetened with stevia, a natural plant extract. In addition to water, its primary ingredient is colloidal silver.

Colloidal Silver is based on an ancient recipe, and it’s perfect for everyday use. If you don’t know what it does, make sure you google it.

Thieves Mouthwash is potent and tastes great. Simply take a capful into your mouth, and rinse and gargle for 30 to 60 seconds. It packs quite a punch! If you find it too strong, dilute 50/50 with water. Voila!

Here’s what our customers have to say….

Jenni C. writes:

My hubby has been using the Thieves Mouthwash and Thieves Whitening Toothpaste for the last year. His dental hygienist told him the other day that for the first time in years she didn’t need to jimmy away the plaque and gave his teeth and gums a clean bill of health! Of course I told the dentist the great news.

Sandra V. writes:

I always keep Thieves Mouthwash on hand, and at the slightest sign of over-dryness I am there gargling for 5 minutes and holding it in my mouth. My tongue can barely survive in there – it’s pretty intense, however it seems to work like oil pulling and drags all the extra bits and whatever’s hanging around in the mouth, nasal and back of throat area.

And it’s not only fabulous for humans! Fiona M. writes:

Several years ago, “Elmo” was getting tartar build-up on his teeth, and the Vet suggested having his teeth cleaned. Instead, I started applying Young Living’s Thieves Mouthwash inside his mouth using a finger puppet. His treat was a little piece of cheese at the end. At first I heavily diluted the mouthwash with water, and slowly built it up to equal parts mouthwash and water. It made a big difference in a matter of weeks. Shortly after at a Vet check, they said his teeth looked great! He became so used to our routine that I only had to say “Teeth cleaning!” and he’d run to the bathroom.

#4 – Oil Pulling with coconut oil

Oil Pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique for overall body health, where each morning upon waking, a tablespoon of coconut or sesame oil is swished in the mouth for 20 minutes, then spat out (not down the sink!). It takes a little bit of getting used to, so you can always start with a smaller amount of oil for a shorter period of time, and build up from there. I personally do this with coconut oil, because of its anti-inflammatory effects.

The sesame or coconut oil helps to pull toxins and other pathogens from the mouth and nearby tissues, and these bind to the oil and are eliminated from the body when the oil is spat out.

But it does more than that! Coconut oil contains mostly medium-chain fatty acids, of which 45-50% is lauric acid, which has proven anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects5. And scientific studies have shown that oil pulling using coconut oil could be effective at decreasing plaque formation and plaque-induced gingivitis6.

Certified Thanyapura nutritionist Marcela Soto Prats explains that, “Bacteria and germs in our mouth are continuously producing toxins that can cause inflammation and infection if not controlled…..[Oil pulling] is an effective way to kill all these harmful germs and bacteria in your mouth.

In this way, it aids the detox process and prevents toxins from entering your body…..It reduces the risk of more toxins and inflammation in your body, especially in your digestive tract.”

Essential oils can be added to the coconut or sesame oil, to create a burst of flavour.

I always add 3 drops of Oregano oil into my coconut oil when I’m oil pulling.

Regulations on using essential oils as flavouring agents vary region to region, so if you live in the UK/Europe, you’d use Young Living’s Oregano Plus Oil (which is the UK/EU culinary range), and in the US you’d use Oregano Vitality oil (which is the US culinary range).
