Purification oil does more than just purify the air…check this out!

25.05.2026

when I first started with Young Living, I had no idea of the treasure chest of wisdom and learning I was stepping into. It really has been an amazing journey of discovery.

People often ask me, “How can I learn more?” Personally I love using Google and ChatGPT to find answers to my questions, and I also love having a range of reference books to refer to, like the ones available through online bookstores such as Seeds of Thyme or Amazon. And of course there is the person who has introduced you to Young Living, and your upline support team who you can reach out to. The Oil Temple bulletins are another great resource of information about the Young Living products. You will find many fantastic bulletins on this one site, just waiting for you to explore.

Today, I want to talk about an essential oil blend that is incredibly popular within the Young Living range. It’s one of the original oil blends that Gary Young created in 1984, long before he started Young Living Essential Oils.

I use it every single week, and I’d never want to be without it. I trust you enjoy the read!

But first – if you’re curious to know more about the frequency of oils and how that helps us to understand why certain oils work best on certain parts of the body, be sure to subscribe to my spiritual blog. The next one to go out will be all about the frequency of essential oils.

These blogs are where I share in more depth about the emotional and spiritual uses of oils. Not all of the blogs are about essential oils. This is a broader platform, where I also share about plant and animal wisdom, self awareness and relationship topics, and spiritual tips, however I weave essential oils into the teachings as often as I can.

7 Amazing uses for Purification Oil

Different essential oils have different qualities. Purification oil is a blend containing Citronella, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Tea Tree, Lavendin and Myrtle. When I smell it, I get mostly hints of Citronella and Lemongrass. It’s an aroma I’d describe as “cleansing” – not one I’d personally choose as a perfume, but one that has a clean, fresh, uplifting aroma.

What’s interesting about this blend is that it has the quality of “drawing” things out.

Let me give you some examples.

1. Drawing out bad smells in clothes

Purification is amazing for this. My most common use for it is to put 10 to 25 drops into my Young Living Thieves Laundry Detergent, then put that into the washing machine.

I don’t do this with every load of washing. I save it for the loads where I have something particularly smelly.

You know that smell your clothes get when they sit wet for too long, and they go a bit musty? Or if you’ve left clothes in your washing machine for too long, and they get that damp stink to them?

I simply wash/rewash them with the Thieves Laundry Detergent, and they come out smelling fresh and clean. They don’t smell like Purification oil – they just smell clean.

Alternatively, you can put a few drops onto a dryer ball to put in with your clothes dryer, and that will also transfer this beautiful fresh smell onto your clothes.

2. Drawing out bad smells in cupboards & drawers

If you want to keep your clothes smelling fresh in your cupboards and drawers, it’s as simple as putting a few drops of Purification oil (typically 3-5 drops) onto a cotton pad, and placing that cotton pad in your drawer. It fills your drawer with a fresh, clean scent, and this scent transfers onto your clothing.

3. Drawing out bad smells from the air

Purification oil wouldn’t be my top choice as an oil to wear on my body as a perfume. You may love it…but it’s not my favourite. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not a bad smell at all. I just favour lighter smells or more florally or earthy smells.

What I love about Purification oil is that when I diffuse it, it is fantastic at masking bad aromas. And it doesn’t leave the house smelling like Purification oil (at least, not to my nose). Instead, the house just smells clean.

One of my cats is recovering from a bladder infection, and unfortunately he started peeing around the house – onto cupboards, onto carpet, against doors. Cat pee is definitely not a smell I enjoy being around, so in addition to cleaning up the pee with Thieves Household Cleaner, I’ve also been diffusing Purification oil to disguise that tell-tale odour. And it’s done a great job!

In his book Essential Oil Reference Guide (Legacy Edition) Gary Young says, “I created Purification [oil blend…] because in my travels, I couldn’t stand going into motels with the odours and all the chemicals, so I made it….to help purify the air in the home and office. This blend neutralized mildew, moulds, fungus, cigarette smoke and other obnoxious odours.”

4. Drawing out bad smells from toilets

In my classes, I love making a healthy air freshener that can be used in toilet areas to disguise the smell of human waste. Here’s a simple recipe:

In a 50ml spray bottle, add the following ingredients, shake and spray:

  • 1.5 tsp of Witch Hazel or Vodka (that helps the essential oil to disperse in water)
  • 8 drops Purification oil blend
  • 8 drops Lemon oil
  • 4 drops Peppermint oil
  • Top up with filtered water

Then I go around and spritz it above the heads of my guests, and we all laugh because it’s probably the first time they’ve had a toilet spray put on them that is actually healthy and smells beautiful!

It’s much better for our health than those commercial devices that attach to public toilets and send a scent into the air every few minutes. Unfortunately those scents are usually comprised of synthetic aromas including phthalates, which are powerful hormone disrupters. Not only are they pungent to sensitive noses, they are a danger to our health. I wish more companies knew about this fact, and banned them!

5. Car deodorisers

I’m wondering if you might have noticed this yourself?

The longer I’ve been around natural smells like the high quality essential oils that Young Living produces, the less tolerant my nose has been to synthetic smells.

You know those scented Christmas tree cutouts that people hang from their car visor (ie. rear vision mirror)? I notice a lot of Uber drivers are using them nowadays, thinking they are doing their customers a favour.

Not me! I ask them to remove it.

But isn’t it great to have a healthy aroma to diffuse in your car, in case you need to disguise a bad odour (like someone’s body odour or strong perfume, a child’s vomit, a smelly pet, a smoker in the car…you get the picture).

This is where you can diffuse Purification oil in your car.

It can be done as simply as putting a few drops on a tissue which you place in the air vents, or you can use a more sophisticated car diffuser – there are plenty of clip-on varieties available online.

We even have usb diffusers that are perfect for travel and car trips. This beats a synthetic Christmas Tree any day!!! Check out Young Living’s “Wanderful 2.0” diffuser. That’s my favourite travel diffuser.

6. Cleansing the energy of a room

This is another of my favourite ways to use Purification oil. Before I knew about Young Living and I used to do a lot of spiritual and practitioner sessions, I would be “smudging” my home every day in order to clear the energy of my clients.

We all carry emotions, and it’s natural that when those emotions come to the surface, we can leave a residue or fingerprint of those emotions in whatever space we’ve been in.

Once I started using the Young Living oils and I learned about the power of Purification oil, I began diffusing Purification oil in my home instead of using a smudge stick.

It was a much nicer and more uplifting aroma than burning sage (as much as I love sage and smudging), and it fast became my absolute favourite oil for freshening the energy of a room, and bringing it back to “neutral”.

It does exactly what a smudge stick does, and it meant that I only needed to smudge my home once every 3 months or so, instead of every day. That’s how great a job the Purification oil did!

Another simple trick is to wash your floors and surfaces with Thieves Household Spray, and add some Purification oil into it.

Here’s a great recipe: Into a 500ml glass or PET plastic spray bottle, add the following ingredients, shake and spray:

  • 15ml (1 tablespoon) of Thieves Household Cleaner
  • 10 drops Purification oil blend
  • 8 drops Peppermint oil
  • Top up with filtered water

Your home will smell amazing!!!!

7. Enjoying the great outdoors

Purification oil is also one of my “must have” oils whenever I go on an adventure outdoors. I love to rub it on my exposed arms and legs so I can enjoy the great outdoors annoyance-free.

And because it’s soothing to the skin, if I ever notice a blemish on my skin during one of these adventures, it’s a great oil blend to rub onto that spot.
