Rose oil would have to be one of my absolute favourite single oils. It’s smell is the closest thing to heaven I could imagine!
Many years ago, Noel proposed to me with a bottle of Rose oil. Of course I said yes!!! And knowing how precious and expensive that little bottle was, I smelled it a lot, but rarely used it.
One day I took it with me on a flight, and when I arrived at the other end, the bottle had leaked and my clothes smelt of roses. I took that as a sign from Spirit that I needed to be more liberal with my oil!!!
Not all roses are created equal
Did you know that Roses originated in Asia? There are over 250 different species, and more than 10,000 hybrids.
Of the 30 that are renowned for their beautiful fragrance, only three of them are commonly distilled for their essential oil for use in perfumes and more. These are:
- French Rose – Rosa gallica
- Cabbage Rose – Rosa centifolia
- Damask Rose – Rosa damascena
Most of the Rose oil produced in France uses solvents to extract the essential oil from the Cabbage rose. This produces what’s called an “absolute”….and typically some of the toxic solvent can be left behind in the bottle of essential oil.
You definitely don’t want to be putting that on your body!
Why companies use an “Absolute” instead of an essential oil?
The answer is simple. It’s all to do with the cost. Absolutes are cheaper to make, so they suit any type of commercial application, including the perfume industry.
Yet it’s the Bulgarian Damask Rose that is renowned for producing the finest quality essential oil, sometimes referred to as “Rose Otto”. This beautiful plant is mostly cultivated in the Balkan mountains of southern Bulgaria, in the Valley of the Roses…..and it’s very expensive to produce.
It takes approximately 10,000 Damask Roses (pictured here) to make just 5ml of Damask Rose oil.
And because in Young Living all essential oils are produced with NO CHEMICALS WHATSOEVER, and the single oils are not diluted in carrier oil (meaning your bottle is 100% roses)…well, you can only imagine the cost of production!
This is why 5ml of Rose oil is the most expensive and exquisite oil that Young Living produces.
The Power of Rose oil on the aura
Rose oil also has one of the highest frequencies of any essential oil. At a whopping 320 MHz (compared to the human body, which is approximately 66 MHz)….well, you can just imagine how much of a firecracker a single drop of Rose oil will put into your energy field!!!
Many years ago, I was talking to a friend about the Young Living oils, and I told him I was going to show him the effect of Rose oil on the aura. He already knew how to see auras, so this was going to be loads of fun.
I was standing a few metres from him, and all I did was to take the lid off my bottle of Young Living Rose oil.
I went to put a drop into my palm, intending to pop it on my body so he could see my aura. But even before the drop emerged from the bottle, he was already going “WOW!!!!” My aura had grown just from taking that lid off the bottle!!!! Why? Because I was already inhaling the beautiful fragrance, even before that drop had landed on my body.
Needless to say he was completely sold on the wonders of Rose oil, and promptly ordered a bottle.
Before and After Aura Pics
I had another experience of Rose oil on my aura, also quite a few years ago. I was in Perth, and I had a stall at a local Spiritual Expo. As luck would have it, there was an Aura Photographer at the expo. I’d already decided that I would get some before and after pics done of my aura when using essential oils.
As I was standing in line to have my “before” picture taken, the phone rang. It was my Mum, informing me that my Dad had had a stroke. This was very emotional news for me. Tears were rolling down my face as I stood in line, and I was still highly emotional when the “before” pic was taken.
So what oil would I use? Well, fortunately I had my Rose oil with me, so that was the oil I applied to my chest, and 10 minutes later I had my “after” pic taken.
Check out the amazing transformation in my aura from that single drop of Rose oil!!!!
You’ll see all the beautiful pink/purple that appeared around my heart and throat area, and my face was bathed in yellow (representing illumination). And yes, I felt much calmer and more peaceful after the Rose oil went on.
The Emotional and Spiritual Uses of Rose oil
Rose oil is renowned as an emotional tonic of the Heart, able to help us heal emotional wounds. That’s why I love to wear it on my heart chakra, in the lower centre of my chest.
As Gabriel Mojay describes in his book Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit:
Bringing warmth to a Soul grown cold through abuse or hurt, Rose oil can touch the deepest despair, restoring trust that makes it possible to love again.
WOW!!! Don’t we all need some of that!
In addition to being classified as a Herb of Love and renowned as an aphrodisiac, the Damask Rose is also considered to be the “Holy Rose”, a symbol of God’s Love for the world. That’s why it often appears in images of the Virgin Mary, such as when she appeared to Saint Bernadette at Lourdes in France.
Cooking with Rose oil
Because we only use a small amount of essential oils at a time, even the most expensive oils like Rose oil can still work out very economical to use….and this includes its use as a food flavouring.
For example, this recipe below uses 2 tablespoons of Rosewater to flavour enough Panna Cotta for 6 people.
Instead of using Rosewater, you can use 1 or 2 drops of Rose oil. This works out a similar price to the 2 tablespoons of Rosewater…and you get all the emotional, spiritual and frequency benefits that come with the oil.
Your dinner guests will love you, and your recipe will have that “edge” over any traditional Panna recipe.
NOTE: In Australia/NZ, we can use Young Living’s Rose oil to flavour our food and beverages, as it’s listed as one of our culinary oils and is compliant with Food Standards Australia & New Zealand (FSANZ). However, if you live in the US, instead of using Rose oil, use Young Living’s Rose Vitality Oil. This is simply Rose oil labelled in a way that is compliant for use in cooking in the US. If you live in the UK or Europe, Young Living’s Rose Oil is not one of the “Plus” oils, meaning that it’s not labelled for use as a flavouring agent.
Coconut and Rose Panna Cotta (dairy free!!!) Recipe by Artemis
- 2 x 400ml cans of coconut milk (don’t use the reduced fat variety)
- 6 tablespoons of natural sweetener (honey, maple syrup or coconut nectar)
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla powder (powdered vanilla beans) or vanilla essence
- 4 teaspoons of animal gelatin (or for a vegan version, use Agar Agar – do a search on google to work out the conversion ratio from gelatin to Agar Agar)
- 2 tablespoons of coconut water (I love “Taste Nirvana” brand)…or filtered water if coconut water is not readily available
- 2 tablespoons of Rosewater, or 1 to 2 drops of Young Living Rose oil (1 drop for a subtle rose flavour more like Rosewater, or 2 drops for a stronger rose flavour).
- 6 x 150ml ramekins (moulds)….or use 6 mugs as your makeshift ramekins
- Some coconut oil or Young Living’s V6 oil to grease the ramekins
- Fresh rose petals for decoration
- Place the coconut water (or filtered water) into a small bowl, and sprinkle the gelatin on top. Let it sit for 5 minutes, allowing the gelatin to dissolve into the water. This will help avoid any gelatin lumps.
- Warm the coconut milk mix on a medium to low heat. Make sure it doesn’t boil! You want a low simmer only.
- Add the vanilla powder (or essence) and 4 tablespoons of sweetener. The vanilla powder will add an off-white colour to your Panna Cotta.
- Taste for sweetness, and add extra sweetener to taste (eg. another 1 to 2 tablespoons).
- Whisk together, and bring to a low simmer.
- Add the coconut water/gelatin mix, and whisk together until the gelatin is fully dissolved and combined.
- Add the rosewater or 1 drop of Rose oil, and taste. Another drop can be added for a stronger Rose flavour.
- Grease the ramekins with coconut oil or V6. Pour the Panna Cotta mix into the ramekins, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
- To remove the Panna Cotta from the ramekin, simply slide a knife along the edge. This will remove the suction. Then put the ramekin into a bowl of hot water for 15 seconds in order to warm the outside of the ramekin.
- Invert the ramekin onto a plate, and voila! You have your Coconut and Rose Panna Cotta. Decorate with fresh rose petals.Serves 6.
Rose oil – an aphrodisiac for your skin!
Rose oil has been revered for the skin for thousands of years. In fact, the very cosmetics that Cleopatra used contained actual roses!!!
Rose oil rejuvenates the skin, helping to restore moisture balance and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scars.
It benefits all skin types, including dry, sensitive and mature skin, and it normalises oiliness of the skin.Here’s my absolute favourite skincare recipe using Rose oil:
Artemis’ “Elixir of Youth” Recipe
This beautiful serum can be made up in the following proportions. Depending on the desired quantity, you can double or even triple the amounts of each oil used. Naturally, I only use the Young Living brand of oil, because of their absolute purity and perfection:
- 1 drop Rose oil
- 2 drops Vetiver oil
- 2 drops Patchouli oil
- 4 drops Carrot Seed oil
- 4 drops Frankincense oil
- 6 drops Cedarwood oil
- 8 drops Sandalwood oil
Apply a couple of drops of this mixture to your face (neat) each evening before sleep, or mix with a small amount of Rosehip oil as a base.
Why these oils?
The following information is extracted from Dr. Sabina DeVita’s book, Saving Face:
- Rose oil rejuvenates the skin and helps to restore moisture balance, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and scars
- Vetiver oil rehydrates and soothes the skin, helping to plump up thin and sagging skin
- Patchouli oil helps to prevent wrinkles, by both toning and tightening sagging skin
- Carrot Seed oil helps to restore the skin’s elasticity, improving skin tone and optimising skin health
- Frankincense oil reduces the appearance of skin blemishes and smoothes wrinkles
- Cedarwood oil supports optimal health in the skin and hair
- Sandalwood oil hydrates and nourishes the skin and smoothes the appearance of wrinkles
A tip when using Rose oil
Rose oil solidifies in cooler temperatures in much the same way as raw coconut oil.
So if your Rose oil is not coming out of your bottle, simply put the bottle against your skin for 5 to 15 minutes until it’s warmed to body temperature.
This will turn it back into liquid, and then you will be able to dispense the drop(s) that you need.
