Sleep like a baby with this ancient essential oil on your pillow
13.03.2026
Because of the exceptional quality of our oils, it gives the impression that they are all very expensive, however that’s not the case. If you look through the price list, you will see a vast range in product prices, from the very inexpensive to the higher price tags.
Have you ever wondered why some oils are a lot less expensive than others?
It’s primarily to do with the yield. In other words, if you take a large bucket full of raw plant matter, how many drops of essential oil will you get from that? For some of our more pricey oils, you’d be lucky if you got even 1 drop. The plants where the yield is the highest are mostly our citrus oils. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind of the fruit, and the yield is fantastic. Ie. you get a lot of drops of essential oil from every piece of fruit.
At the other end of the spectrum we have Rose Oil, one of our most expensive oils. That’s because it takes the petals of 10,000 damask roses to make just 5ml of Rose oil!!!
One of my personal all-time favourite oils is Sacred Sandalwood. It’s out of this world….yet its price tag is also high.
But did you know that we have another oil that is one of our least expensive oils, which has many of the same amazing qualities as Sacred Sandalwood oil for a fraction of the price?
That’s what this post is all about. Enjoy!
Ancient wisdom comes to the rescue

Do you remember the stories of the biblical cedar tree from Lebanon (Cedrus libani)? For centuries this Lebanese Cedar was used to build palaces, temples and boats throughout the Middle East. The reason it was so popular as a building material is because, like Sandalwood, its wood contained a high proportion of essential oil.
This helped protect the wood from deterioration, because the essential oil in the wood kept insects and fungus at bay. This is also why it was used by the ancient Egyptians in both their tombs and their mummification process.
You might recall the Song of Solomon, which tells how Cedar was used to build Solomon’s temple. Solomon used 30,000 labourers to carry the timber into Lebanon.
His temple was panelled in Cedar, with not a piece of stone visible.
Although Solomon didn’t completely eradicate the Cedar trees, he did make a substantial dent…and this era began the massive long-term depletion of the Lebanese Cedar forests by many different empires.
Whilst our essential oil doesn’t come from this famous tree, it comes from a close relative – the Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) which is native to the Atlas mountains of Algeria and Morocco.
The genus name “Cedrus” comes from the Arabic word “kedron”, which means power. So let’s take a look at why this oil is so powerful.
Want more energy? Increase your oxygen levels.
Our body needs oxygen to thrive and survive, yet in our modern world a lot of people are oxygen depleted. This can occur as a result of:
- Shallow breathing (think stress!)
- Sleep disorders like Sleep Apnoea
- Lung conditions like asthma and lung infections
- Reduced lung function as a result of smoke and chemical inhalation
- Heart and circulatory issues
- Anaemia
- Poor ventilation
- Shock and emotional trauma

If you want to raise your vitality and energy levels, bringing more oxygen into your body is a great place to start.
This is where essential oils are such a gift to us.
Many essential oils contain a group of compounds called “sesquiterpenes”. These are heavier molecules, which penetrate the skin and tissues easily, and even cross the blood brain barrier.
In fact, sesquiterpenes are what we call “lipophilic”, meaning they love fat and dissolve in fat and other oily substances. That’s why we use a vegetable carrier oil to dilute our essential oils, rather than using water. But did you know that your brain is 60% fat? The blood-brain barrier which is the membrane around the brain allows lipophilic molecules to penetrate much more readily than water-soluble molecules.
Why this is important is because sesquiterpenes are naturally calming to the nervous system. They help to take us out of sympathic override, and into a balanced parasympathetic state.
As soon as we’re in a more parasympathetic state, our breathing deepens, our heart rate slows, we’re more relaxed, and we reduce our production of stress hormones.
Deeper breathing takes us into a more meditative state of consciousness. And of course we take in more oxygen when we’re breathing deeper, and this works its way around our entire body including our brain.
And do you know the oil which has the highest levels of sesquiterpenes? It’s Cedarwood oil, which is 98% sesquiterpene.
That’s a whole lot of vitality just waiting for you in that 15ml bottle.
Want better sleep? Cedarwood oil can help

Because sesquiterpenes are heavier molecules, they evaporate slowly compared with lighter molecules. This means the scent lingers for longer, so that oils like Cedarwood which are high in sesquiterpenes will stimulate the olfactory receptors in your nose over a longer period.
Why is this important? It’s because your brain is in your nose! These olfactory receptors are specialised brain cells that sit in your nose.
When they are stimulated by an essential oil, they send a signal directly to your brain.
What’s really interesting is that they completely bypass the conscious brain, and go directly to the limbic region of your brain (your subconscious). This is where you store memories and associated emotions, and it’s also your spiritual centre. And those signals travel from your nose to your brain faster than the speed of light!!!
So with Cedarwood oil, your brain is being stimulated consistently in a way that evokes emotional balance, spiritual centredness, grounding and a more meditative outlook.
This is one of the reasons why I love to put a drop of Cedarwood oil and a drop of Lavender oil on each side of my pillow at night. That’s one of my tips for getting a deep, restful night’s sleep. It’s not the only oil combo that I use for sleeping, but it’s definitely one of my regulars.
And it’s so simple!!!
Do you ever find yourself in an emotional whirlwind?
We can understand a lot about how an essential oil will help us when we observe the nature of the plant that it’s derived from.
Cedarwood oil is steam distilled from the wood of the Atlas Cedar tree. This is a beautiful, strong tree, with a long deep tap root that stabilises the tree during times of drought or strong winds.
This means that this very same quality comes to us in the essential oil. Cedarwood oil gives us strength in difficult life situations, helping us to anchor and ground so that we can survive any storm that life throws our way.
Skin Deep
Taking this one step further, think about how a tree trunk grows. It grows in concentric circles, always from the inside out (similar to how our skin renews itself).

New skin starts inside and migrates its way to the surface, just as the inner rings on a tree get pushed further out as new rings are added.
It’s therefore not surprising that Cedarwood oil is an amazing oil for the skin, because it carries the frequency of growth and restoration.
I’ve seen some amazing transformations occur when it’s been used on skin….and although I can’t share the specifics here due to Government compliance regulations, I encourage you to try it for yourself so you too can discover the miracle that is Cedarwood oil.
