Sleep Saviours – 5 ways to help your child sleep like a baby!

Sleep is one of those critical nutrients. Like air and water, if we’re not achieving restful sleep, we’re simply not operating at our best. For children, it’s even more important. Restful sleep gives them the much-needed downtime for their body to rejuvenate ready for another power-filled day.

But if you have kids, you’ll know that many factors can interrupt a good night’s sleep. Watching a scary movie on TV, having a fear of the dark, getting overexcited before bedtime or spending too much time on blue light digital devices can all interfere with the natural sleep rhythms.

Snug as a Bug

Getting children ready for bed can seem like a rodeo that never ends. Kids asking for one more snack, two more songs, and three middle-of-the-night wake ups make it all a little chaotic!

But don’t worry, we’ve got your secret weapon for these night time battles: essential oils! Use these essential oil tips and tricks to help your little ones (and big ones) get just as excited about bedtime as you are.

While essential oils are awesome and will often transform your night time rascal into a sleepy angel, you still want to ensure you’re practicing good bedtime routines – things like:

     • No digital devices for an hour before sleep
     • Going to bed at the same time each night
     • Creating a good sleeping environment (dark, comfy and quiet – not too hot and not too cold)

 

Step 1 – Prep the Bedroom

Create a beautiful, peaceful environment in your children’s bedroom as they prepare to sleep. Spritz their bedding with:

     • Seedlings Linen Spray, or
     • Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Hydrosol

 

 

STEP 2 – Enlist Feather the Owl’s help

Set up your Feather the Owl diffuser on your kid’s nightstand so the bedroom is filled with relaxing, calming odours. Here are some favourite night time diffuser recipes:

Sleepytime Superstar

     • 2 drops Cedarwood
     • 3 drops Bergamot
     • 4 drops Lavender

Winddown Wonder

     • 3 drops Orange
     • 3 drops Lavender
     • 3 drops Roman Chamomile

Bedtime’s Best Friend

     • 1 drop Geranium or Rose
     • 4 drops Frankincense
     • 4 drops Lavender

Don’t have a diffuser? Don’t worry – instead you can add a couple of drops of Valor, Lavender, Peace & Calming, Orange and/or KidScents SleepyIze to a cotton ball inside their pillow case. This works wonders too, as it’s a natural diffuser!

 

STEP 3 – Enjoy a calming bath

Nothing says “soothing” like a warm soak with essential oils added. Many essential oils are calming, including Lavender, Cedarwood, Sacred Sandalwood, Roman Chamomile, Orange and Peace & Calming.

Make up an irresistible Sleepytime Bath Blend, by adding the following essential oils to a dollop of Young Living’s Bath & Shower Gel Base, and adding to the bathtub:

     • 3 drops of Lavender
     • 3 drops of Orange
     • 2 drops Cedarwood
     • 2 drops Sacred Sandalwood

Finish the bath with a few drops of either Lavender or KidScents SleepyIze added to a dollop of Seedlings Lotion and massaged into their back and tummy.

 

STEP 4 – Use your Monster Spray (Optional)

Mix up these homemade monster sprays and keep them on hand to use during your bedtime ritual. Spray them anywhere gremlins and goblins may be lurking in the bedroom (eg. under the bed, in the wardrobe, behind curtains, etc.).

These recipes come from Young Living’s blogIn a 120ml glass or PET spray bottle add 100ml water and a teaspoon of witch hazel with one of the following blends:

 

Closet Monster Skedaddle

• 3 drops Bergamot
• 3 drops Lemongrass
• 3 drops Grapefruit

 

Under-the-bed Brute Be-gone

• 4 drops Cedarwood
• 3 drops Lavender
• 2 drops Vetiver

 

Vampires Vanish-Away

• 5 drops Stress Away
• 4 drops Ylang Ylang

 

 

My Magic DreamCatcher

• 5 drops Dream Catcher
• 4 drops Geranium

 

 

STEP 5 – Asleep they Go!

Kids love nighttime rituals. Once you get them hooked on one of these two rituals, they’ll never want you to stop!

Valor Balance:
Put 2 drops of Valor under their right foot, and 2 drops of Valor under their left foot. Massage it in (with a clockwise circling motion). Then place your right palm under their right foot, and left palm under their left foot, and hold for 5 to 10 minutes.

or

Aroma Massage:
Apply a drop or two of Lavender, Peace & Calming and/or KidScents SleepyIze to a dollop of KidScents Lotion, and massage this into their big toes and around the navel. Make the massage something special….pour plenty of love into it.
