Introducing Geranium Bourbon – an oil made in heaven!

17.02.2022

Did you know that Young Living has just released a new single oil in their range?

It’s called “Geranium Bourbon”. In our Australian and New Zealand markets, this oil has been part of a special Valentine’s Day promo, and comes bundled with a beautiful glass perfume bottle (see pic below). That promo lasts until 28th Feb 2022, so make sure you check it out!

When I first heard of Geranium Bourbon, I had no idea what it was. Is it the same as our regular Geranium oil? And if not, where are its points of difference, and how would you use it? And what does it smell like?

I was so full of curiosity about this new oil that I had to get it, and I was so keen to delve into the properties of this wonderful new addition to our range. Would you like to know what I discovered?  Enjoy the read….

Introducing Geranium Bourbon – an oil made in heaven!

Have you ever heard of Geranium Bourbon?

Also known as Rose Geranium, this beautiful essential oil has a very different aroma to our regular Geranium oil. It’s still distinguishable as geranium, but its notes are so much higher….much more reminiscent of our beautiful Rose oil.

When I took my first breath of Geranium Bourbon, it was so exquisite and subtle that I needed to bring all of my focus to it….and this is one of its gifts. It focuses us into the present moment in a state of utter awe. It carries us up into a state of light and ecstasy.

Botanically, they are minor variants of the same plant. Where regular Geranium is Pelargonium graveolens, Rose Geranium is Pelargonium graveolens var. Roseum. “Var” just stands for variety. And because of this minor variation, they have virtually the same properties. So when you are looking up your essential oil reference books or searching online, the properties mentioned for Geranium can equally be applied to Rose Geranium.

But they do smell different, and for that reason, Rose Geranium is often more highly sought after due to its more “refined” aroma.

Geranium oil was first distilled by French chemist Recluz in 1819. But did you know the essential oil of Geranium and Rose Geranium is distilled from the leaves, not the flowers? I was really surprised to hear this, as most of our florally oils (like Ylang Ylang and Rose) come from the flowers of the plant. It therefore makes sense that the leaves of Rose Geranium smell strongly like roses (hence its name).

Because Rose Geranium oil smells a lot like Rose oil, it’s often used in aromatherapy in place of Rose oil, or even to adulterate Rose oil. Thankfully Young Living has the strictest processes in the industry to ensure their essential oils aren’t adulterated….but you do need to be careful if you’re buying other brands.

In the world of essential oils, “Oils ain’t Oils”, and price is one of the indicators of quality.

As I was doing research into Geranium Bourbon, I came across a mention that it was originally sourced from the Island of Reunion, which lies 680km (420 miles) east of Madagascar and 180km (110 miles) southwest of Mauritius, in the western Indian Ocean….although now it is grown in other regions of the world. This article mentioned that “it is not widely available and is much sought after¹.”

How to use Geranium Bourbon:

So knowing that Geranium Bourbon and regular Geranium oil have very similar properties, let’s look at some other ways you can use Geranium Bourbon (aka Rose Geranium):

1. Calming & Soothing
Just like Geranium oil, Rose Geranium inspires feelings of calmness, strength and security, so anytime you are having a stressful or challenging day, make sure you put a drop on your chest or a few drops in your diffuser so you can be breathing it in and remembering to “smell the roses”.

2. Shock & Upset
I’ve used Geranium oil with great success on horses in the face of a traumatic adventure. Anytime you’ve had a shock that’s rocked you out of balance, or you are feeling anxious about an upcoming event, reach for your Geranium or Rose Geranium oil.

3. Aphrodisiac + Strengthens Yin Energy
A natural aphrodisiac, these are beautiful oils for women of all ages, helping to harmonise our emotional and body rhythms, and centre us into our luscious “yin” energy.

4. A wonderful Skin Tonic
No matter your age or skin type (oily, dry or combination), Geranium and Rose Geranium will balance the pH of your skin.

This means they have the ability to give your skin exactly what it needs. They add moisture where you are too dry and regulate oil production where you are naturally oily. And they are very gentle on the skin, so they’re perfect for dry, aging or sensitive skin.

Within the realm of skin care, Geranium and Rose Geranium oil help to:

• Fade the appearance of blemishes by promoting a more even distribution of melanin (the pigment that causes skin darkening)
• Their naturally astringent properties can help to tighten and contract the skin, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles
• They work as a natural skin antioxidant, slowing down the visual signs of skin ageing, and helping you to look younger and more radiant!

Create your own Happy Face Oil!

Looking for a lovely oil blend to apply to your face? Here’s one you will fall in love with!

• 2 drops Lemon oil
• 2 drops Geranium Bourbon (or regular Geranium) oil
• 1 drop Frankincense oil
• 1 drop of Cedarwood or Sacred Sandalwood oil

Mix this into 2 tablespoons of carrier oil (such as Young Living’s V6 oil), and apply to your face each evening. It can even be applied to any dark circles under your eyes! Because it contains Lemon oil (which is photosensitising to the skin), this mix is best applied 12 hours before you need to go into direct sunlight or UV light.

What other oils can I mix it with?

Geranium and Rose Geranium blend well with Lavender, Patchouli, Vetiver, Rose, Neroli, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Jasmine, Juniper, Bergamot, Tangerine, and Orange. So if you are thinking of making yourself a beautiful roll-on or an amazing diffuser concoction, make sure you experiment with oils from this range.
